Artist / Programmer / Composer
Born in Tokyo in 1976, Daito Manabe grew up in a musical family and was immersed in both music and programming from an early age. After performing as a DJ and playing in jazz bands, he studied mathematics at Tokyo University of Science. During this time he encountered the work of composer Iannis Xenakis, whose ideas about mathematical structures in music strongly influenced his approach to algorithmic composition and generative systems.
In 2006 he founded Rhizomatiks, where he began developing projects that merge technology, visual media, music, and physical expression. His work ranges from large scale performances and installations to technological research projects. He has collaborated with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Björk, Squarepusher, Arca, Nosaj Thing and Perfume. His audiovisual performances have been presented internationally at festivals including Sónar, MUTEK and TodaysArt.
In recent years his research has focused on the intersection of biological systems and machines, including projects involving biofeedback systems and cultured neural cells developed in collaboration with neuroscientists.
Together with Sinan Bokesoy he co‑founded Sonic Planet LTD. in London, a city long recognized as one of the world’s centers of experimental music. The studio develops experimental software and generative audio tools.
He also leads Studio Daito Manabe, a compact research oriented studio that combines human specialists and AI driven workflows. Through this hybrid structure the studio pursues rapid research, prototyping, and large scale creative experimentation.
